According to the reports, Ghalib secured the 19th rank in the entire state in the 10th class Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education (BOSE) examinations with 94.8 per cent marks. Ghalib completed his 12th class Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (BOSE) examination at SRM Welkins School, Sopore, Jammu and Kashmir and secured 88 per cent marks. On the day of his result in class 12th, Ghalib expressed his happiness and shared his aim to become a doctor as this was his father’s wish. He said,

We learn from the mistakes of the past. My father could not pursue his medical career (at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences). I want to complete it.”

According to the sources, after completing his schooling, Ghalib went on to prepare for the NEET examination for which he enrolled himself in a coaching centre at Srinagar; however, he couldn’t crack it. Later, he decided to prepare for civil services examinations. His good marks brought an opportunity of entry with a scholarship to one of the universities in Turkey to pursue a degree in Medical Science.

The Execution of father, Afzal Guru

Reportedly, Afzal was the co-operator of the masterminds behind the attack. Reportedly, after two days of the Parliament attack, i.e., 15 December 2001, the special cell of the Delhi police arrested Afzal from the bus stop in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the media, on 4 June 2002, Afzal Guru and others were charged with various acts such as section 102-B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), section 3(2) of the Prevention of Terrorist Act (POTA), and section 302 (Murder) of the Explosive Substance Act. Reportedly, on 4 August 2005, the Supreme Court confirmed the death sentence of Afzal Guru. On 3 October 2006, Tabassum Guru (Afzal’s wife) filed a mercy petition with former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam  which was rejected by then President Pranab Mukherjee on 3 February 2013. On 9 February 2013, sharp at 8 AM, Afzal Guru was hanged to death in Tihar jail, Delhi.

Controversies

Reportedly, Ghalib Guru struck at a media outlet for referring to him as a “proud” Indian. In an interview, Ghalib explained that he was wrongly represented as a “proud” Indian after an interview in which he talked about the delay in the issue of a passport to him even after having the Aadhar card with him. Ghalib made it clear in an interview that he could never call himself a proud Indian as his father was taken away from him forever by the Indian government.

  • During an interview, Ghalib shared his peaceful relationship with the security forces. He also mentioned that they motivated him to pursue his studies and stay focused on his aim of being a doctor. Ghalib said,

    I mean, there have been circumstances when I met them. But they always motivated me. They told me if I wanted to pursue medicine, they will never interfere with my studies or my family. They said I should stay focused on my dream and become a doctor.”
