O’ahu’s Hi’iakaināmakalehua under the direction of Robert Keano Ka’upu IV and Lono Padilla took the kaikamahine (girls) overall prize.

Friday featured newly composed mele by kumu hula and emcee Manu Boyd. The boys’ mele “He Inoa No Keawe-a-Heulu” is a name chant for the esteemed great-great-grandfather of Queen Lili’uokalani. The girls’ mele, “Ho’oheno Ululani,” is a chant inspired by the high chiefess of Hilo, Ululani, the great-great grandmother of Lili’uokalani. The evening featured many interpretations that integrated Lili’uokalani’s royal lineage.

Friday also included presentations to kumu hula Carolee Nishi and Ed Collier.

The Queen Lili’uokalani Keiki Hula Competition was created in 1976 by Uncle George Na’ope and Kahu Wendell Silva to give children the opportunity to showcase cultural talents. Named for Queen Lili’uokalani, the event has been a mainstay of hula tradition in Hawai’i for more than four decades.
