Rosario Dawson, Dr. Cornel West, Others Honored For Community Activism

The Brotherhood/Sister Sol, a leading non-profit organization, held their annual Voices 7 benefit last night in New York City. The swanky event was hosted by CNN Anchor and Special Correspondent, Soledad OBrien, who presented awards to Cornel West, Rosario Dawson and the 106th Mayor of New York City, David N. Dinkins.

The swanky event was hosted by CNN Anchor and Special Correspondent, Soledad O’Brien,  who presented awards to Cornel West, Rosario Dawson and the 106th Mayor of New York City, David N. Dinkins.

“We’re very excited about this year’s Voices event; Voices 7 is a unique opportunity for us to celebrate our members and honorees’ achievements. Our honorees are all individuals who embody the ideals of The Brotherhood/Sister Sol, which are Positivity, Community, Knowledge and Future,” said Khary Lazarre-White, Executive Director & Co-Founder of BHSS.”We strive to offer long term, intensive involvement for our members and provide unique services that support their personal development and academic achievements which is why 95% of BHSS Alumni are working full time or enrolled in college,”  

The Brotherhood/Sister Sol empowers young Black and Latino women and men by helping them to become critical thinkers and community leaders.  BHSS provides comprehensive, holistic and long-term support services to youth who range in age from 8 to twenty-two by focusing on issues like leadership development and educational achievement, bias reduction, sexual responsibility, sexism and misogyny, political education and social justice, Pan African and Latino history, and global awareness. Services are provided via four-six year rites of passage programming, thorough five day a week after school care, school and home counseling, summer camps, job training, college preparation, employment opportunities, community organizing training, a community garden stewards and environmental education program and free legal representation. 

Last night, former mayor David N. Dinkins received The Ella Baker & César Chávez Award for Positive Community Development, Rosario Dawson received The Frida Kahlo Award for Innovative Creativity, and Dr. Cornel West will receive The Bayard Rustin Award for Social Justice. Russell Simmons and Congressman Charles Rangel also came out to show support.
