Abisagboola Oluseun John, known as Bankulli, is a versatile figure in the music industry. He is widely acknowledged as one of the custodians of Afrobeats.
Despite being credited for his vocals on Jay Z and Kanye West’s collaborative album “Watch The Throne,” as well as Kanye West’s “Yeezus” album and more recently Beyonce’s Grammy-nominated “Lion King” album, Bankulli, a multi-instrumentalist, is yet to fully explore his first love – singing, a passion he discovered as a child.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, which has brought despair and downturns worldwide, Bankulli collaborates with the talented singer and songwriter Wurld for his official debut single, “Gbemiro.”
Performed mostly in his native Yoruba language, “Gbemiro” is a prayer and an invocation, expressing a deep yearning and an exalted plea to his destiny.
Explaining the inspiration behind the song, Bankulli says, “The world at this moment needs hope, and the only way I know to spread any ray of it despite everything happening around us is through songs and words that will be uplifting.”
Set against the infectious beat produced by Nonso Amadi, the infectious hook and Wurld’s soothing vocals convey a mellow and evocative message that envelops listeners warmly, transcending the limitations of social distancing.
